With the holiday’s just barley in our rear-view mirrors and resolutions fresh on our minds, it can be hard to switch gears and talk about school applications, but that’s exactly what we are going to do because deadlines are right around the corner.
Miami-Dade county is the fourth largest school district in the United States, with close to 400 public schools to choose from. Public schools can be divided into three general categories: community schools, magnet schools and charter schools. For more info about the difference between the three click here.
Today, we are going to talk about Magnet Schools, one of the best educational options available to Miami parents.
Right about now you are probably wondering, what are magnet schools?
Magnet Schools are publicly funded schools or programs that offer students specialized education that focuses on a student’s special interests, talents, and abilities. Miami Dade offers 115 magnet programs in a vast variety of educational tracts including STEM, Visual & Performing Arts, Liberal Arts and International Programs. Virtual options are also available.
Why choose a Magnet school?
Every year Miami Magnet schools receive more National Magnet Merit Awards than any other school district in the county. Yay Miami!
For example, this year, the following Miami-Dade Magnet high schools were ranked in U.S. News & World’s Annual List of the Best High Schools. You can read more here.

How do I apply?
Applications can be submitted online or by mail and are open every year from October 1-January 15th, which means we have just under 2 weeks to get applications in. Parents can choose up to five magnet schools per application but may only apply to one program per school. To search a complete data base of Magnet options click here.
Many Magnet schools have additional requirements such as auditions, interviews, portfolios, minimum grades or pre-requisite courses. Parents are responsible for contacting individual schools for more information on additional requirements as individual schools do not have the resources to contact each applicant individually. Applicants will be notified by mail if they have been accepted into a program by March 15th.
